A quest to see the last remaining wonder of the world brought us to Giza at 5am, and a shady, slightly drunk guide named Mohammed. Unfortunately, it was a hazy day so we missed the sunrise, but nothing beats riding horses through the Western Desert with the Pyramids for scenery and no one around...

Part 5 of 48 Locations: Asian Boat Ride (continued) Steamboat Willie Part 1 World of Gremlins Pretty slow paced, isn't it? Epic Mickey is a puzzle platformer. That means that while there is some fighting and platform-hopping to be had, the main allure of the game is you figuring out how Mickey is supposed to get from Point A to Point B. Adding to this are various goodies hidden in every room. For instance, here, I finally finish with the Asian Boat Ride. If you've sat through "Disoriented," you might think I cleaned out the room. Well, you're wrong! Do you see that white veil to the left of the door? There's somethng behind there. I had enough of this place though--I was getting quite sick of the place. When the door opened, I wanted out, and it seems the projector takes us through "Steamboat Willie." "Steamboat Willie" was from 1928 and is one of the most famous Mickey Mouse cartoons of all time and certainly the most famous one to feature the classic black-and-white Mickey with the dots for eyes (as portrayed in this game). It is the third Mickey Mouse cartoon (after "Plane Crazy" and "Gallopin' Gaucho"). In "Steamboat Willie," Mickey is a cabin boy working for Pete, who's the captain. When Pete isn't at the helm, he tries to steer the ship. Pete shows up and tells Mickey to scram, and Mickey then proceeds to use the livestock as a makeshift orchestra playing "Turkey in the Straw." These projector stages are some of my most favorite parts of the game. They remind me heavily of Mickey Mania during the 16-bit days, except modernized: The graphics are in full 3-D (despite looking just like the cartoons they come from), and the background music is taken from the music in the shorts themselves. This alone could make a full game. (Incidentally, both "Steamboat Willie" and "Mickey and the Beanstalk" have appeared in Mickey Mania. "The Mad Doctor" too.) The projector stages are also a stark contrast to the grim feel of the rest of the game, providing a wonderful change of pace. And if you notice, they are also entirely untainted by the Shadow Blot--that's water, not Thinner. I suppose it can't enter through projectors. "Steamboat Willie" takes Mickey to the World of Gremlins, the center of the area and where their houses are. Gus's house is apparently next to a Thinner pipe, which has erased it from existence--Mickey has to restore it back to normal. For this, dawn arrives in the World of Gremlins, making it less dreary than when Mickey arrived. Also, we make our way up to Small Pete's boat. There's a gear in the back, an mickey spins it to find--a chest inside! What did Small Pete store here?
